How to increase iron in your child's diet

The following food groups are rich in iron, so try to add more of them to your child's diet:

  • Meat, fish and alternatives - all meats including, beef, lamb, mince, pork, chicken, duck, sausage. Oily fish such as salmon, mackerel, tuna, as well as egg yolks, baked beans and lentils.
  • Fruit and Vegetables - dried fruits such as raisins, currants, sultanas, apricots and prunes. Green leafy vegetables also rich in iron.
  • Bread, cereals and potatoes - fortified breakfast cereals such as weetabix and cornflakes, as well as wholemeal bread, wholemeal flour and oatmeal.
  • Fatty and sugary foods - chocolate, liquorice, nuts, nut butters and seeds.
