Doorstep Crime Initiative
The Doorstep Crime Initiative was launched by the Bogus Callers Task Force, in partnership with North Lanarkshire Council and Strathclyde Police for our tenants and homeowners. Part of the initiative is the Bogus Caller Scheme. The scheme has been set up to give both older and vulnerable tenants and homeowners - who have been the victims of bogus caller crime - the means to alert the police to bogus callers. It involves using an alarm unit installed in the home which connects to the alarm service call centre.
If you would like to report a suspected incident of Doorstep Crime, please contact your local police or Trading Standards office.
You can contact Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.
Keeping you safe in your home: Contractors who carry out inspections and repairs should always display an identification card.
Always ask to see this card before you let them in. The card will detail:
- The company name
- The person’s name
- A photograph
If you have agreed a security password to be used prior to a person entering your home, please ask the person for this.
If they can’t show you a card or you have any other reason to be suspicious, do not let them in!
The Crime Prevention Officer at your local Police office can give advice about the safety devices (locks, timers, lighting etc) and procedures (closing curtains after dark, cancelling regular deliveries when you are on holiday etc) that you can put in place to increase the security of your property.

Crime is a major cause of anxiety for many people. The Wise Group, with a view to reducing crime and alleviating the fear of crime, works with social landlords to supply and fit a range of home security measures for tenants. The Safer Homes initiative is an excellent example of a community regeneration programme which has helped thousands of tenants to feel safer and more secure in their own homes.
The scheme is funded by North Lanarkshire Council. Each household receives a security survey to ensure that the measures provided and the accompanying advice are tailored to its need. The measures include: Door chains, Door viewers, Door and window alarms, Personal alarms, Tenants have reported a noticeable improvement in the quality of their lives as a direct result of home security projects.
The Wise Group can also provide a "Fast Response" service. This has proved extremely popular and effective, dealing with emergency/urgent referrals from the Police, the Social Work Department and the Fire Service. The majority of referrals are responded to within a maximum of 48 hours.
To find out if you are eligible for the service, phone 0800 917 8479.
